The Flyers just didn't have it in Game 5, as the Philadelphia defense was torched in a historic fashion last night.
The Chicago Blackhawks controlled Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals as they beat the Flyers 7-4 in a game Chicago led from start to finish. Dustin Byfuglien scored two goals including a empty netter that sealed the win for the B'Hawks at the 17:55 mark in the third period.
It was the first time in ten years that a team has scored seven or more goals in a Stanley Cup game.
Byfuglien with his two goals tonight has 10 for the postseason and scored his first goal of the game on a power play in the second period.
Chicago had a 21 percent success rate on the power play in this 2010 playoffs and they improved on that number tonight going two for four with the one man advantage.
Chicago looked like it had fresh legs to start the game and kept the momentum it gained from the end of Game 4 when they came back from a 4-1 deficit. The B'Hawks fired off six shots in the first 10 minutes of the first period compared to the Flyers two shots on net.
Chicago improved to 9-1 this postseason when they score first. Chicago ran Flyers goaltender Michael Leighton from the game after allowing three goals on 13 shots in the first period.
Brian Boucher entered the game for the Flyers as Philadelphia enjoyed a brief spark when Scotty Hartnell scored 32 seconds into the second period. And then Boucher gave the goal back when Patrick Kane scored his second goal of the Cup Finals to make the score 4-1. Boucher went on to take the loss in the game and gave up three goals on 14 shots.
Flyers coach Peter Laviolette had no response about whether or not Leighton would be back in net for the start of Game 6 on Wednesday night.
Philadelphia entered the game with a 31 percent success rate on their power plays in the Stanley Cup Finals, but got shut out last night failing to score on three attempts.
Game 6 is set for Wednesday night back in Philadelphia and the Flyers will need to step up once again to force a winner take all Game 7 back in Chicago on Friday night.
